Eten, drinken, verblijven in Trentino Dolomieten

Fantastic food, drinks and palatial stays in Trentino. South Tyrol or Alto Adige in Italian is the northernmost province of Italy and part of the autonomous region of Trentino-South Tyrol. This destination in Italy borders Lake Garda and is also close to the Dolomites.

In addition to being beautiful, Trentino is also seen as the gastronomic destination of Northern Italy. This means tasty (vegetarian) specialties, cheeses, delicious wines, dolce and fantastico restaurants and agroturismos with Italian and Austrian influences. In this article I have listed the highlights for you. So satisfy your hunger for undiscovered pearls and the dolce vita life in the mountains of Northern Italy.

specialties of Trentino

Trentino, South Tyrol and the Dolomites are known for delicious mountain cuisine. Fertile soil, cool mountain air, sun and water ensure that country life flourishes here. And that results in endless vineyards, juicy fruit, nuts full of flavor, nutty wines, salty mountain cheeses and more local delicacies. Holidaymakers are reaping the benefits!

What should you eat, drink, taste in Trentino Alto Adigo? Be sure to try local specialties such as Canederli (gnocchi with herbs). Trento Doc sparkling wine, Vino Santo (wine from slowly dried grapes). And of course olive oil, because this region produces the northernmost olive oil in Italy. Trentino olive oil has a specific earthy, special taste. That’s because it’s hard work growing olive bushes in the mountains.

A great way to taste different flavors from the region? Take a culinary bike tour in the Comano valley along various addresses. But you can also reach these places by car, on foot or by public transport. The bike tour is described in my article with 15 highlights in Trentino and the Dolomites.

Pesto, liqueur from walnuts

Typical of Balbido in Trentino (near the village of Rango, in the Comano valley) are the rows of thick Bleggio walnut trees. A perfect place to taste these small, spicy walnuts is Agriturismo Maso Pra’ Cavai in Balbido. This agriturismo makes the most amazing culinary creations from these walnuts. The homemade walnut pesto, walnut cake and walnut liqueur fresh from the press are delicious. By the way, Maso Pra Cavai is also a nice place to stay. But even without an overnight stay I enjoyed it immensely. Tip: book a tasting in advance with a short tour, or stop by on site.culinary Trentino

MountainCheese

Trentino is known for its spicy cheeses. In summer, cows graze in the meadows dotted with alpine flowers. The altitude and alpine grass give the cheeses a firm, sometimes spicy taste. A nice place for a quality lunch and cheese tasting at the Azienda Agricola Fontanèl cheese farm in Fiavé. Close to Rango and Bleggio.

The cheesy lunch menu at Azienda Agricola Fontanèl includes creamy yogurt, various types of soft and hard cheeses from grazing mountain cows. You can choose a standard cheese tasting, or put together your own cheese board with a glass of vino. Belly full? And on to the next address!

fruit, fun and picnic

Not far from the cheese farm is fruit grower Maso Maserac. The smell of sweet blueberries, raspberries, cherries and strawberries greets you as soon as the gate swings open. Owners Simona and Francesco not only grow red fruit, jams and juices, but also many dreams such as: ‘weddings among the orchards, or a campsite among the strawberries’.

The recently set up sunset picnics, or fruity picnics with a view of the Comano valley, are already a hit. Rightly so, because fun with lots of goodies from your own garden and kitchen. Everything from fresh fruit to ‘lampenada sauce’, jams and more is delicious. Picnic costs from 15 euros, booking can be made via the website. Tip: there is also a small shop. At the end of this culinary bike tour my backpack is filled with jars of pestos, sauce, juice, liqueur. To slowly enjoy the flavors of Trentino at home.

Whether you are a die-hard carnivore, vegetarian, gluten-free, or vegan? Trentino is the cream of the crop for gourmets. Sparkling Nosiola wines: both a white and a sparkling wine, or a Müller Thurgau, but also Vino Santo (made from semi-dried grapes). Trentino is the region of slow food and slow wines, which means a lot of good food. Wine lover? Many wine tours are also organized in the region.food, drink Trentino

Best restaurants in Trentino?

There are undoubtedly many, but at the culinary addresses below: from cafe, slow food to star restaurant, you’re definitely in for a treat. Because I’ve tried them myself, so I can speak to them. And that at unprecedentedly friendly prices. So you should also go to Trentino for a culinary holiday.

Maso Limarò in Sarche in Calavino

At this restaurant in the middle of the mountains, close to Lake Toblino, it is like being in the middle of the Rocky Mountains, but smaller. Not only the location, but also the map rocks! Vegan, vegetarian dishes with local ingredients steal the show.

You can taste a bit of slow food in the pizza with a thick base. A long rising time makes the base very airy, and the topping is also original and delicious. The dolci from Maso Limarò are a nice ending to a dinner with matching local wines, or lunch in Trentino style.

Osteria Fiore in the village of Poia

This restaurant with dishes from local cuisine is one in the ‘what a surprise’ category. This surprise starts upon arrival. The centenary family restaurant consists of two rooms. You cross through a basic cafe to the attractive restaurant.

Osteria Fiore

Left: Osteria Fiore, right Masó Limaro

The menu of the Osteria Fiore inn features delicious regional dishes with catchy names such as ‘Strangalopreti di burro’. When I ask the roguish chef Silvio what kind of dish this actually is, he answers: “These are knödel or gnocchi with sage, herbs and spinach, but are you calling me chef? Just say innkeeper, that suits this place much better.” Anyway, Osteria Fiore is one of thousands. By the way, the Osteria Fiore is in the top 10 of Osteria’s Italia’s best slow food, so that actually says it all.

Restaurant Peter Brunel

For fine dining with a local touch, Peter Brunel in the village of Arco in Trentino is the best place. In 2003, Peter Brunel restaurant was awarded a Michelin star, so this chef knows his stuff. In a chic gastrobar/restaurant and wine shop, Peter Brunel and his brigade cook amazing food.

Tasty and eye-catching dishes fly from the kitchen, and local wines from the cellar. Delicious! Tip: Asparagus risotto and dessert with passion fruit are worth coming back for. Vegetarian options are on the menu. Vegan? Please report in advance. Also nice: perfect price-quality ratio.

Where to stay in Trentino?

Many tourists choose to stay in Garda Trentino near Lake Garda, the city of Trento, or Lake Caldonazzo as a base. But taking a tour through Trentino is also a lot of fun. Camping is very popular in the summer months, but also holiday homes and agroturismos, campsites are selling like hot cakes. This is especially easy for families. Accommodation in the mountains of South Tyrol is often cheaper than Front Lake on Lake Garda.

Trentino has about 6 different thermal baths. Such as Terme di Levico, terme di Pejo, or Teme di Dolomia. The thermal water in the village of Terme di Comano flows abundantly from natural springs in the mountains of the Comano Valley straight into the spas. The four-star Terme di Comano hotel offers a supersonic spa experience.

You can go here for relaxing treatments, thermal baths, swimming pools and a range of wellness facilities. And all with a view of the beautiful surroundings of the Comano Valley in Northern Italy. Tip: it is also possible to buy a day ticket at the Terme hotel.Small-scale accommodation? How about the top addresses below…

  • Maso Limarò in Sarche: restaurant and hotel in Calavino with views of mountain walls.
  • Agriturismo Maso Pra’ Cavai: comfortable and cozy overnight stay among the walnuts.
  • Albergio Osteria Fiore: 30 minutes by car from the city of Trento. Authentic osteria, or a kind of inn with fantastic food. Very reasonable prices.
