WHAT CAN YOU DO ON THE MARKERWADDEN

This uninhabited island in the Markermeer is one big adventure. Especially with children! In the summer it is nice to relax here on the white beaches and clear water. But this Dutch archipelago is also a magnificent place in spring, autumn and winter. This ‘group of islands’ is a paradise for hikers, bird watchers, children and nature lovers. I would like to explain why a trip to the Markerwadden is a must with children in Flevoland ….

What exactly are the Markerwadden?

But let’s first start with the basics… Geologically speaking, the Marker Wadden are not real mudflats, but artificially created natural islands consisting of five different Islas of approximately 800 hectares in total. This gem is part of Nieuw Land park, and is literally a brand new nature reserve. The largest nature and recreation island is accessible to the public. Other islands serve as nature and research areas.

Where are THE MARKERWADDEN located?

These so-called are located right in the former Zuiderzee near Lelystad, to be precise: less than five km from the Houtribdijk alias the Markerwaarddijk. This is the connecting dike between Lelystad and Enkhuizen. Lelystad is the capital of the province of Flevoland in the center of the Netherlands.

Why was this Wadden area constructed?

This project was created by Rijkswaterstaat and Natuurmonumenten to give nature a helping hand. Much needed because the closure of the Markermeer caused silt accumulation and therefore cloudy water. Sludge threatened to suffocate the underwater world in the Markermeer, at the expense of ecological quality.

Aquatic plants, shellfish and fish could barely keep their heads above water, putting pressure on the food supply for migratory and breeding birds. In short: time to break this vicious circle and restore nature. With the arrival of this man-made archipelago in 2016, this experiment seems to have succeeded. Hopefully this is enough to turn the tide…

How does this actually work? The archipelago is made of -30 mil. cubic silt, sand and clay from the Markermeer. Sludge is collected around the islands, making the water clearer and allowing (underwater) life to resume its normal course.

By the way, the word Wadden means ‘impermeable area’, and that is exactly what it is. This windbreaker is a beacon for nature in Flevoland. Nature comes here naturally. Not a single seed has been planted or planned but is growing naturally like crazy, and the bird population has also increased considerably.

Bursting with life

The islands are full of creeks and swamps: a true bird magnet. Spoonbills, bats, ducks, grebes and sand plovers live there. The fertile island has now become an ideal stopover for migratory birds, so this mission has certainly been a success.

Inmiddels hebben zich hier meer dan 120 plantensoorten gesettled. In de zomermaanden zorgt Moerasandijvie voor een paars kleuraccent, en hier en daar ploppen gele bosjes brem op uit de duinen. Een prachtig gezicht. Natuurlijk proberen ook ongewenste bezoekers zich op het eiland te wortelen. Zoals wilgen. Maar deze worden dan ook geëlimineerd door vrijwilligers van Natuurmonumenten. Bos en moeras gaan immers slecht samen.

Wandelen is ontdekken

De beste en tevens enige manier om het eiland te verkennen is te voet. Wie net als ik graag een rondje eiland zou willen fietsen moet ik helaas teleurstellen, want fietsen en andere vervoersmiddelen zijn (nog) niet toegestaan. Maar in alle seizoenen is een wandeling geen straf.

Er zijn verschillende wandelroutes uitgestippeld: van 3- tot 12 km, dus je kunt je hart ophalen. Wandelen kan zowel onder begeleiding van een natuurgids, maar met een individuele hike heb je direct het expeditie Robinson gevoel te pakken!

Samen met Juup, Pip en Mams doen we een ‘rondje eiland’. Verdwalen kan niet, nat worden wel. Tijdens ons bezoekje aan het einde van de zomer komt het met bakken uit de lucht. Dat mag de pret niet drukken. Om een goed overzicht van het grootste eiland te krijgen lopen we vanuit de haven als eerste naar de markante Steltloper: uitkijktoren. Deze biedt uitzicht over het eiland, op een heldere dag is zelfs Amsterdam waar te nemen.

Kijkhut met glasbodem

Juup is niet te stuiten en huppelt gevolgd door een clubje dansmuggen als een haas over de smalle schelpenpaden . ‘Jammer genoeg nog geen vogel te zien, maar wel een vis’ zegt Pip als we aankomen bij de Duikeend: een vogelkijkhut met glasbodem. Deze duikeend staat midden in het water, waardoor je door het glas zo het moerras in kijkt. Behalve een verdwaalde vis, zien we door de regen even geen moer, maar doorgaans valt er hier heel wat te spotten.

Eerste zoogdier een mol…Wij laten niet met ons spotten en vervolgen onze expeditie over het eiland en zien in de verte een setje lepelaars en een geel bord. ‘Wat staat daar nu op?’ vraagt Pip. ‘Eh dat is een waarschuwingsbord voor drijfzand antwoord ik. In het begin was het hier sowieso pionieren in één grote poel van drijfzand.

Grandma Ankie walks with a wide arc around the plates, but still manages to tell you that the first mammal to appear on the Marker Wadden was a mole. It may have been taken as a stowaway on a work ship, but that is not certain. Busy bees have also been spotted that actually only live in forests, all in all quite mysterious.

OVERNIGHT STAY MARKERWADDEN

While chatting, we walk back towards the harbor for a quick cup of coffee in the Natuurmonumenten pavilion. Then our outing is almost over and it is time for the crossing to Lelystad. Time flies, a few hours turn out to be too short for an excursion to Marker Wadden with children. It is therefore best to spend a night here in one of Landal’s new beach houses. A short holiday in Marker Wadden is of course the ultimate.

How do you get to the Marker Wadden?

Several boats depart from the Bataviahaven in Lelystad to the other side. The ship MS Waddenzee is highly recommended . The ship has been beautifully renovated: complete with a mini museum and a cozy galley where you can relax with a cup of hot chocolate and a sandwich. When the weather is nice, you can chill on the deck on the lounge cushions. The best part of this crossing is the enthusiastic explanation by the enthusiastic Ans from the MS Waddenzee. Costs: around 25 euros pp. Check the website for current departure times.

Other options. Rent a boat and moor it in the harbor. Natuurmonumenten offers a ferry service. Tickets: around 22.50 pp. View the current sailing schedule on the website. The ‘Zuiderzee’ sails from April 20 to May 11 and from October 12 to October 25. Boat Willem Barentsz sails from May 30 to June 10. Abel Tasman: July 18 to August 17. The Markenexpress :  from September 14 to September 29.

Practical information

A trip to the Markerwadden? Bring enough food and drinks, or go to the restaurant. There are no shops, so take plenty of groceries with you if you stay overnight. By the way, there is no camping site. The island is car-free, there is no transport. Another great trip to Flevoland? Visit UNESCO Schokland.
