There are more than 100 accommodation options in and around Oudtshoorn, in Klein Karoo on the Garden Route: from star to budget hotels, so the choice is huge. For anyone who wants to be pampered without paying the top price, the accommodation below is a find.
These are one of those addresses that would definitely emerge as winners in the television program ‘Four in a bed’, so take advantage of them. Oudtshoorn is located in the middle of the Klein Karoo: Mars on Earth. A completely different environment awaits, less than a four-hour drive from Cape Town.
Yet there is a lot to experience in this desolate, desert-like environment. From visiting ancient caves and ostrich farms, to ziplining, to a ‘meerkat safari’. This makes Oudtshoorn an excellent base to visit special sights on the South Africa Garden Route and enjoy a nice dinner and accommodation at the same time.

The backyard of the Denne
Guesthouse de Denne
In my opinion, Guesthouse de Denne is a cross between a boutique style stay and a B&B. The design and layout of this working Ostrich farm immediately stands out. Everything from rooms to reception to restaurant ‘Ma Belle’ has been decorated with love and taste by Louise: the lady of the house.
It is also special that De Denne has thought of every target group: from newly married couples, people over sixty to large families. So you can spend the night with the whole family in a beautiful cottage, or a ballroom… I mean a family suite. Even the ‘standard rooms’ turn out to be anything but ordinary.
The hotel is equipped with no fewer than two swimming pools, so after a day of sightseeing you can easily jump from one pool to the other. With a view over the valley and ostriches, you would hardly want to get out of the pool and go out. Juup: ‘If you want you can visit ostriches all day long, they just live here!’
See the sun setting? The restaurant is the best place to view this phenomenon and enjoy a delicious meal at the same time. When you leave this special stopping place, a nice surprise awaits you: a spick-and-span washed car! Service to the max. Handy: De Denne organizes various tours in the area. Tip: if owner Johan is in a good mood, give him a hug. Johan is a walking Wikipedia South Africa and knows everything about the environment, politics and you name it.
Guesthouse Mooiplaas
This beautiful place in Klein Karoo could easily have been the brother of neighbor De Denne, because both accommodations are well matched, without losing their own identity. This resort and farm is the ideal place for a bit of total relaxation in the Klein Karoo.
Escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday travel and enjoy it. From the cool Infiniti pool you have a view of the Swartberg Mountains and the ostriches. I can tell you that from the veranda of your (family) suite or room it is a pleasant place to relax until the early hours. A three-course menu is prepared daily in the restaurant.
All dishes are served with a smile and a chat by the cheerful John. Oh and while you’re there: take a look at Ben behind the Braai in the evenings. With a lot of passion, Ben throws a nice piece of meat on the fire for you. Vegetarian or suffer from allergens? No problem, the kitchen will immediately accommodate this.

Mooiplaas
And after the meal you can rest well in the peaceful Mooiplaas Oudtshoorn. And the next morning? Then the party starts again… And how! The ladies in the kitchen usually get up at 5:00 am to bake hot sandwiches for breakfast. According to Reisachtig and kids, Mooiplaas makes the tastiest breakfast in South Africa. Pure indulgence. Various farm tours are organized, so you certainly won’t be bored in Mooiplaas .
Eating and drinking in Oudtshoorn
Dining out? With so many good eateries and lodges with restaurants, you can’t go wrong here. But restaurant Nostalgie stands out because of its nostalgic looks and authentic South African cuisine. Take a seat on the attractive terrace and order whatever your heart desires from the menu. I really like the vegetarian Bobotie or curry there. People with allergens or a diet can also indulge in Nostalgia . This restaurant is open all day for lunch, tea and cake.
